The New PDX Experience

My first experience with the newly remodeled Portland International Airport (PDX) was in August, following a summer family vacation. What was planned as a 17-hour trip turned into a 30-hour ordeal, complete with a flight delay and an unexpected overnight stay in Los Angeles. To make matters worse, I was battling a severe cold throughout the final leg of the journey.

Despite the exhaustion, stepping into the newly opened wing of PDX from the arrival terminal was transformative. The thoughtfully designed space, featuring warm, natural materials and elements, immediately exuded a sense of peace and tranquility. It felt cozy, inviting, and surprisingly calming—a true testament to the power of intentional design.

In October, I had the opportunity to return to PDX to assist Sea Legs Media on a project for Freres Wood. My role involved capturing behind-the-scenes photography and architectural imagery of the space. It was fascinating to witness how the collaboration of various stakeholders—from material suppliers to designers and architects—came together to create such a cohesive, light-filled, and airy environment. This project is a beautiful example of how architecture and design can enhance not only a structure but also the experience of those who inhabit it.
