Softening the Edges

Adjacent to the Oregon State Capitol, I photographed the exterior and interior of this thoughtfully remodeled structure, a project executed by Pence Contractors with design contributions from Otak and SERA Architects. A defining theme of the renovation is the integration of circular, organic forms, which introduce a sense of fluidity and contrast against the rigid geometry of the original rectilinear space.

Originally constructed in the 1930s, the building functioned as Salem’s central post office until 1976. Today, it serves as the headquarters for the Department of Administrative Services, the principal administrative body of the Oregon state government.
